In our efforts to stand up for Social Security, the Gray Panthers and other allied organizations, have received press-worthy mentions from both supporters and those in opposition, including former Senator Alan K. Simpson who now serves as the as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Repeatedly, Simpson's remarks have shown disrespect towards the Social Security program and especially the American people who pay into and rely on this system for economic security (whom he refers to as "the lesser people in society").

Gray Panthers is Committed to Protecting Social Security |
Recently, Social Security has become a very hot topic and the attacks on the Social Security program have again come to the forefront. The Federal Deficit Commission, who has proposed cuts to the Social Security program, will report on December 1, 2010 and make recommendations on how to decrease the deficit. In the meantime, Gray Panthers has been actively working to have our voice heard on this issue. Social Security is not just a "senior issue", but an issue that affects us all. We are working to ensure that Social Security is not weakened by those who wish to balance bailouts on the backs of Americans.

THE GREENING OF THE GRAY PANTHERS
by Joan Wile
One had always thought of the Gray Panthers as an admirable organization advocating for the dignity and rights of older people, as so brilliantly represented by its founder, the magnetic Maggie Kuhn.

Their struggle against ageism is still a very important part of their agenda, but they vest other causes with as much weight. |
